Camp Reddelich yellow barrio
The city we want. The city we fight.
Workshop with HIC at Camp Reddelich yellow barrio
Evictions, gentrification, global cities, slums, squats...
From local struggles to global strategies.
Exchange of experiences and proposals.
We are living in global and in shrinking cities, in slums and banlieus, in squats and rental housing, in north and south. Our living conditions are very different. But more and more, there are some things we have in common: Worldwide, inhabitants suffer from evictions and gentrification, commodification and privatization, unaffordable housing and social exclusion. Worldwide we can identify similar actors and structures behind these processes. And: Worldwide social movements have gathered experiences in resisting the bad developments, in mobilization for social human rights, in finding self controlled solutions and in seeking for general alternatives.
Habitat International Coalition (HIC), a worldwide alliance for the defense and realization of the right to housing, tries to condense the multiple experiences to common global strategy lines: campaigning against housing right violations, advocacy for human rights based settlements („charter for the right to the city“), promotion of people‘s solutions („social production of habitat“)… At this workshop we want to ask ourselves whether these or other strategic proposals can build a successful platform and orientation for the internationalization of local struggles.
