International Standards for Housing Rights

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights declared that housing is one of the components of the human right to an adequate standard of living. Since then, the international community on the right to housing have developed a couple of instruments, including some internationally binding convenants. Here, we provide some links to basic information.

Report of the Special Rapporteur on adequate housing

The present report, submitted in accordance with Human Rights Council decision 1/102, aims at providing practical and operational tools to promote, monitor and implement the human right to adequate housing. The report also identifies a normative gap - the non-recognition in international human rights law of the human right to land.

Housing rights legislation - international and national legal instruments (PDF)

This research report by UN Habitat and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has been prepared to promote global understanding of the linkages between housing and human rights. Its focus is on housing law and how it can be used by States and the international community to address the problems of homelessness, forced evictions and housing deprivation from a human rights perspective.
